Jazz and Soul band tour to Barcelona 2008

Music Tour to Barcelona June 2008

Each year the music department organises a tour abroad at the end of the summer term for the Jazz and Soul Band and other interested music students.  Past destinations have included Denmark in 2005, Paris in 2006 and Prague in 2007.  This year 39 music students went on a 7-day concert tour to Barcelona and Costa Brava from 25th June to 1st July with Mrs Petersen, Miss Roberts, Mr Hughes and Mr Herd.

We travelled overnight by coach to Tossa De Mar, a resort on the Costa Brava coast about 1 ½ hours from Barcelona, where we stayed in the 3* Hotel Novo Park just 5 minutes walk from the beach.  Tossa De Mar is a pleasant resort with an old town centre with cobbled streets and a medieval castle as well as lots of modern facilities, shops and restaurants.

The Jazz and Soul Band gave 3 concerts on the tour.  The first one was in the town square of Tossa De Mar on 27th June.  This was one of the highlights of the tour as we had a huge audience of over 300 people, mostly tourists from all over the world, one of our largest audiences ever abroad.  We sold 33 of the new Soul and Jazz Band CD at this gig.

The second concert was in the very popular resort of Lloret De Mar on 28th June on a stage right next to the beach with the sea as the backdrop creating a beautiful setting.  At the end of the concert the local tourist board presented us with a plaque with an inscription thanking the bands for their performances.

The third and final concert on 29th June was in a very different location; it was in the small town of St Iscle de Vallalta which lies inland in the mountains.  The audience were all locals and it was great to get the chance to perform to real Spaniards rather than just tourists!  The audience consisted of people of all ages and they were very appreciative.  They even put on a meal for us at the end of the concert and presented each band member with a cap.  Spain was playing in the final of the European Championships simultaneously with our concert performance but despite this there was a large audience who stayed to listen to our concert right till the end.  Spain won the final and the championship and the celebratory atmosphere we experienced in the town and as we drove back to our hotel in Tossa De Mar was incredible.

As the concerts were all in the evening we had time to do lots of sight-seeing in the morning and late evening.  We spent the morning and afternoon of the first and second full day in Barcelona where we visited the Olympic Stadium, the Nou Camp stadium (home of FC Barcelona), the famous Sagrada Familia church designed by Gaudi, the Picasso Museum, and Las Ramblas (the main pedestrian shopping street with street entertainers and the Boqueria food market).  On the third full day in Spain we went to Portaventura, the biggest theme park in Spain offering many exciting rides.  We also went bowling in Tossa De Mar one evening.

During our concerts we sold a total of 49 of the new Soul and Jazz Band CDs on the tour which is a record for abroad.  This was simply due to the fact that the bands performed brilliantly and entertained their audiences really well.  The students who came on the tour were fantastic throughout and should be congratulated for their excellent behaviour and mature attitude during the whole week.
